In 2025, the global average temperature was about 1.43°C above the pre-industrial level. As climate records continue to be broken, 2050 has become a recurring milestone in Net Zero commitments. It was not chosen at random; it comes from scientific emissions pathways linked to limits on global warming.

Climate records keep being broken

According to the World Meteorological Organization, 2015–2025 were the 11 warmest years on record. The year 2025 ranked as the second- or third-warmest year, with global average temperature around 1.43°C above the 1850–1900 average.

Prolonged heatwaves, extreme rainfall, droughts, floods, and tropical cyclones continue to harm people, ecosystems, and economies. A single year exceeding or approaching 1.5°C does not mean the Paris Agreement’s long-term target has formally failed, because that target is assessed over multi-decadal averages. Even so, recent temperature trends show that the window for action is shrinking rapidly.

From the Paris Agreement to Net Zero

The Paris Agreement was adopted at COP21 in 2015 with the goal of holding the increase in global average temperature well below 2°C and pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

To pursue this goal, countries prepare and update Nationally Determined Contributions, or NDCs. These set out the actions each country intends to take to reduce emissions and strengthen climate resilience.

The Paris Agreement works in five-year cycles, with each new NDC expected to be more ambitious than the previous one. Net Zero has become the long-term destination because merely slowing the rate of emissions is not enough to stabilise temperature. CO₂ accumulates in the atmosphere, so new emissions continue to increase total concentrations and warming. To stop additional CO₂-driven warming, global net CO₂ emissions must fall to zero.

Why 2050?

Scientific pathways show that keeping the possibility of limiting warming to around 1.5°C requires the world to cut emissions rapidly now and reach net-zero CO₂ around the middle of the century.

That scientific basis is why 2050 has become a reference point in many national climate strategies and organisational commitments.

The United Nations stresses that the world needs deep emissions cuts during this decade and a transition toward Net Zero by 2050 to keep the 1.5°C goal within reach. But 2050 cannot stand alone. A long-term commitment has value only when it is backed by interim targets, implementation plans, and verifiable emissions-reduction progress.

If emissions remain high in the coming years, the remaining carbon budget will continue to shrink. The world would then need sharper future reductions, face higher transition costs, and rely more heavily on carbon-removal measures.

The gap between targets and reality

Although many countries have announced Net Zero commitments, the world is still not on a trajectory consistent with the Paris Agreement.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme’s Emissions Gap Report 2025, global greenhouse-gas emissions increased by 2.3% in 2024 to around 57.7 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.

Even if current NDCs are fully implemented, warming this century is still projected at around 2.3–2.5°C. Under policies already being implemented, the increase could reach roughly 2.8°C. This shows that current commitments remain insufficient to meet the temperature goals. There is also a gap between announced policies and the capacity to implement them in practice.

UNEP assesses that multi-decadal average warming is likely to exceed 1.5°C, at least temporarily. In that context, the task is not only to limit any overshoot, but also to minimise its duration and magnitude as much as possible.

Every fraction of a degree of warming avoided matters for reducing damage to health, livelihoods, ecosystems, and economies.

Vietnam targets Net Zero by 2050

At COP26 in 2021, Vietnam announced its goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. The commitment has helped drive the development and refinement of policies on emissions reduction, energy transition, and carbon markets.

On 26 July 2022, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 896/QD-TTg approving the National Strategy on Climate Change to 2050.

The strategy identifies climate adaptation and greenhouse-gas mitigation as central tasks. The Net Zero goal is linked to transforming the growth model, using resources efficiently, and strengthening the economy’s resilience.

The policy framework has continued to be detailed through regulations on greenhouse-gas inventories, emissions mitigation, and ozone-layer protection. On 24 January 2025, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 232/QD-TTg approving the scheme to establish and develop Vietnam’s carbon market. The scheme provides a basis for domestic trading of emissions allowances and carbon credits.

In January 2026, at a meeting of the National Steering Committee for implementing Vietnam’s COP26 commitments, the Government again affirmed that reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 is an important action commitment for Vietnam.

Net Zero is not only an environmental target

For Vietnam, implementing the Net Zero goal is also linked to the competitiveness of the economy.

Export markets, investors, and international supply chains are paying increasing attention to emissions data, product carbon footprints, and corporate transition plans. Slow adaptation can raise costs, trade risks, and the risk of losing competitive advantage. Early transition, by contrast, can encourage technological innovation, energy efficiency, new industries, and greater access to green finance.

Carbon management is therefore no longer solely the responsibility of environmental teams. It touches strategy, production, finance, legal affairs, data, procurement, supply chains, and communications.

Which sectors need to transform?

Moving toward Net Zero requires emissions reductions across many sectors at the same time.

In energy, priorities include efficient energy use, expansion of low-emission sources, and modernisation of infrastructure.

In industry, companies need to upgrade technology, optimise processes, use materials efficiently, and manage emissions throughout supply chains.

In transport, measures can include expanding public transport, electrifying vehicles, and optimising logistics.

In agriculture and land use, priorities include reducing methane emissions, managing resources sustainably, protecting forests, and restoring ecosystems.

In production and consumption, the circular economy, sustainable product design, reuse, and recycling can reduce demand for newly extracted resources.

These changes also require human-resource development, data systems, financing mechanisms, and stronger capacity for measurement, reporting, and verification.

From the 2050 target to action today

The distance to 2050 may seem long, but greenhouse gases emitted today can continue affecting the climate system for many years. The Net Zero journey therefore has to begin with measurable steps now.

For governments, that means improving policy, enabling technological transition, and mobilising financial resources.

For companies, a practical first step is to build a greenhouse-gas inventory, establish a baseline, and set phased emissions-reduction targets.

For schools and research institutions, an important role is to develop knowledge, innovation, and the workforce needed for a low-carbon economy.

For individuals, choices about energy, transport, consumption, and waste management can help build social demand for greener products, services, and policies.

Net Zero 2050 is not a promise reserved for the distant future. Its value will be determined by how much emissions are actually reduced in every year from now on.
